    Retail & Merchandising Manager (Deadwood, SD)

    $33,000 - $35,000 a year


    At Deadwood History, Inc. you will work in a museum setting in historical Deadwood, South Dakota managing the gift shops at four of our unique properties. Responsibilities will include purchasing, merchandising, and inventory control for the Adams General Store, Days of ’76 Mercantile, Historic Adams House Gift Shop, and a new location in downtown Deadwood to open in the fall of 2019. Strong supervisory and customer service experience is essential.

    Retail and Merchandising Responsibilities:

    • Research and purchase inventory items that are within the scope of our mission.
    • Create store layout designs and merchandise displays that are well stocked and appealing to the customer.
    • Plan and organize holiday and special event decorating at stores and museums.
    • Manage inventory within designated budget and maintain accuracy of inventory.
    • Formulate stock levels and pricing policies by reviewing customer purchasing activities and inventory turns.
    • Analyze sales reports for profitability ratios and trends to facilitate planning and marketing strategies.
    • Perform evaluations of store operations looking for opportunities to enhance efficiency, productivity, and profitability.
    • Monitor the retail, lobby, and gallery areas to ensure they are safe, clean, and aesthetically appealing at the Days of ’76 Museum and the Adams Museum.

    Staff Development:

    • Proven history of successfully hiring, managing, and disciplining employees.
    • Display expert knowledge of product, company policies, and store strategies.
    • Train, coach, reward, and motivate associates to improve selling and the customer experience.
    • Prepare associate’s work schedules and adhere to labor budget.
    • Build an environment that fosters open and respectful communication with staff.

    Customer Service:

    • Strong understanding of sales and customer service techniques.
    • Responsible for creating an environment that is customer focused.
    • Encourages associates to solicit customer feedback to improve our product and museum environment.
    • Provide prompt responses to customer complaints and concerns.

    Retail & Merchandising Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, management, marketing, or a related field.
    • 3-5 years of combined experience in merchandising, retail management, and employee supervision.
    • Strong management and leadership skills.
    • Excellent communication skills needed to collaborate with other departments and to supervise associates.
    • Strong understanding of retail practices and customer service techniques.
    • Experience with a POS and computerized inventory system.
    • Creative, organized, energetic, responsible, and honest.
    • Customer focused.
    • Able to meet the physical demands of the job which include standing, walking, stooping, and lifting various merchandise contents up to 50 pounds on an as needed basis.
